Humans have so many unique and amazing gifts to give. We all are unique and different, and we all have talents and ideas to contribute to our beautiful planet, which is our Home, and to Humanity, who are our Brothers & Sisters. There are also so many problems, systemic or not, that different cultures and groups of Humans face across the Globe; And it all starts with a lack of understanding.
DEFINITION OF IGNORANCE:
ig·no·rance/ˈiɡnərəns/noun: ignorance
IGNORANCE is at the root of racism and prejudice, as well as misogyny. Ignorance LITERALLY means a lack of knowledge or information. It is our own responsibility, as Human Beings, to educate ourselves and our Children about things we don't know about or understand.
Cultural Awareness is the opposite of ignorance. Awareness is about learning the knowledge and coming to an understanding of what we don't know or understand, which is KEY to achieving respect, compassion, empathy, and harmony between humans. Cultural Competence is imperative to breaking the cycles of generational trauma, systemic racism, and creating a better, more equitable future for our Children and Children's Children, as well as respecting our Home, Mother Earth.
Culturally-Focused Initiatives include supporting Diversity-Focused Organizations and Businesses, advocating for the abolishment of racism and prejudice- Systemic or otherwise, and bringing awareness to problems that certain Cultures face, specifically.
Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women (#MMIW) is one of the biggest systemic issues that plagues Indigenous Reservations across the Nation. Many of these Women & Girls end up being sex trafficked or worse. There is a complete lack of support from Federal Agencies and other Law Enforcement. In fact, the last year the FBI updated the Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women Database was in 2016. That's HORRIFIC. And completely systemic.
And it also means that there is a lack of AWARENESS that this issue even exists.
But that's ALL starting to change. Indigenous Communities & Indigenous-Owned + Operated Non-Profits across the United States + Canada are working together to bring this atrocity to light. They provide knowledge, toolkits for allies, resources, and training materials to teach ALL humans about this very specific problem.
Even though awareness is slowly coming to light, our Indigenous Sisters & Brothers NEED OUR HELP. We MUST become allies in this fight against human trafficking and early death. Becoming an Ally can look like any of the following actions;
Spreading awareness through teaching others, for example, sharing #MMIW posts on Social Media, signing petitions to let our Congresspeople know that we support taking ACTION on passing legislation like "Savanna's Act", or donating monthly to #MMIW causes from Indigenous Owned + Operated Organizations, every act counts.
BUT, THE FIRST STEP IS AWARENESS.
"It is time for congress and the United States to stop lip service without action. It is their responsibility and oath to push for the complete and thorough implementation of Savanna’s Act. As you probably know, the Savanna act was named after Savanna Lafontaine-Greywind, who was murdered in 2017 at 22 years of age. She is one example of too many Indigenous women and girls finding the same fate. The murder rate of Indigenous women is three times higher than non-Native women. It is the third leading cause of death for Indigenous women; over 84 percent of them have experienced violence."

Let Congress Know That YOU Support Passing "Savanna's Act".
Teaching Indigenous History Couldn't Be More Important; Especially In This Specific Era We Are Living In; We are seeing the grotesque themes of Colonialism come to a head, and we can either learn from the atrocities that were committed against our Indigenous Brothers & Sisters, and stop repeating the cycles, or we can continue killing each other over greed and power dynamics while oppressing the truth to continue enabling racist, prejudice, and misogynistic systems. It's a simple choice.
WE MUST BREAK THE CYCLES OF GENOCIDE, RACISM, MISOGYNY, GREED, + DESTRUCTION OF OUR PLANET.

Day Won is a Community Partner and is part of the HOPE Prison Mentoring Coalition for the HOPE Prison Mentor Program. Day Won is entering the Men's Side of the Utah State Correctional Facility to Mentor Men & Boys who are being released from Prison. Day Won also volunteers in the Community; Specifically, the Pacific Islander Community, to disrupt the Pipelines that lead to Prison and/or getting involved with Gangs. They also are leading the way to empathy, understanding, and healing between traditional "Authorities" and Peers in the Community, which is a huge step towards systemic change and addressing the root causes of systemic racism and ignorance.
The Men who launched this amazing organization, Day Won, are formerly incarcerated Community Members; This allows for Peer-Led Perspectives, which is missing from many Models of Care & Pipeline Disruption perspectives. Not only do they Mentor Inmates, both Men and Boys, but they also Mentor young Men within the Community. For example, they have held fundraisers for Community Members who want to play sports but wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise, which has led to completely transforming lives that are at-risk for gang involvement as well as Prison or early death due to systemic racism within marginalized and vulnerable communities.
Day Won is the LEADING ORGANIZATION that has been working with and training the Utah District Attorney's Office directly, in Peace + Healing Circles. Former inmates sit down with their sentencing Judges, Prosecuting Attorneys, Law Enforcement Officers, + Parole Officers to create understanding, empathy, + compassion between each person involved. The Healing that this has achieved so far is unmatched- This specific initiative is what opened the door for Day Won to LEAD the way into expanding the HOPE Prison Mentor Program into the Men's side of the Prison which will help reduce recidivism numbers and disrupt the cycles of trauma; Generational or otherwise. Day Won has also opened up the Peace Circle Training for members of the Community to learn and share with the World.
"The Utah Pacific Island Film Series serves as a communal space of inspiration, individual expression, and social responsibility tied together by a shared love of the cinematic arts and an emphasis on nurturing and highlighting the work of Pacific Islanders and Pacific stories. Film is a powerful tool of connection and conversation and the Utah Pacific Island Film Series began with this belief in utilizing it to have difficult conversations as a community on a number of social issues and topics through film screenings and panel discussions."
