This program was the first volunteer opportunity and program implemented by Journey of Hope in 2014, in Salt Lake City with 17% recidivism in three years. Community Volunteers are trained in the Women’s Case Management Model to follow Gender Responsive Guiding Principles, evidence-based principles. They are matched in pairs with a woman 3-6 months prior to her release from prison and they meet weekly or bi-weekly with the woman on a plan for her success when she walks out and back into the community. They then help her transition and are with her for up to 12 months while she overcomes barriers to housing, employment, treatment, reunification with children and safe family.
This program has assisted hundreds of women walking out of the Utah State Prison, the State rate of recidivism is the highest in the nation at 80%. Our 17% rate shows that when women are safe, can have the opportunity to make a livable wage, have access to trauma informed therapy, housing, and support they are powerfully resilient! We have saved the State taxpayers millions of dollars over the last five and a half years with this program.
Providing case management services from a trauma-informed care approach, allows these Women who struggle with things like mental health and substance abuse, to overcome the trauma they have endured and get to the root of what needs to be healed.

DownloadOur Trauma-Informed Methods & Models + the Disruption of the Sexual Abuse, Harm, & Trauma to Prison Pipelines Is IMPACTFUL. Our Work In The Utah State Prison From 2014 to 2019 Led To A Decrease in Recidivism To Just 17%.
The Evidence Is In; Shame + Blame Does Not Produce Viable Or Meaningful Healing. Support, Nurturing, Friendship, & Compassion Is What Makes The Biggest Difference.
There Isn't "One Way" or "One Size Fits All", When It Comes To Healing Trauma. BUT Combining Trauma-Informed Care + Holistic Healing Modalities, Like Building A Strong Support System, Focusing On Our "Strengths" & Giving Ourselves + Others COMPASSION and Room To Grow & Learn, Spending Time In Nature, Doing Yoga, Meditating, & Changing Our Habits & Caring For Our Physical Bodies, Along With Therapeutic Aspects- Either EMDR, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Plant Medicine Therapy And/Or Treatment, Or INTENSIVE OUTPATIENT OR INPATIENT CARE That Focuses On Processing Trauma & Re-Learning What Healthy Boundaries, Communication, and Self Care Is, PLUS Getting Down To The ROOT CAUSES OF OUR TRAUMA Is Essential To Healing Our Minds, Bodies, & Spirits, As A Whole.
