Journey of Hope offers Case Management Services, Mentoring Programs, & Social Advocacy for the most vulnerable, marginalized, and harmed Women, Girls, & LGBTQIA+ in the Community. We offer evidence-based, trauma-informed, as well as gender responsive care, helping each client navigate the ins and outs of fleeing violence and harm, as well as other devastating circumstances like homelessness, substance abuse, and mental illness. Our focus is on evidence-based, trauma-informed care, with a holistic approach. Having helped over 3,000 Women & Girls across the Wasatch Front, specifically in Salt Lake City, Utah, our model for healing is not only effective but it's life-changing.
We also offer Volunteer Opportunities for Community Members wanting to give back & make a difference in the lives of individuals struggling with recidivism and re-entering the Community from Prison. Our work in the Utah State Prison, through our Prison Mentoring Program, has lowered recidivism rates to 17%, and we are continuing our work in the Prison Mentoring Program to continue to lower recidivism rates. We hope to go Nation-wide with our Trauma-informed approach and Evidence-based models and healing methods, to offer hope and healing to Women, Girls, Affected Youth, & LGBTQIA+ across the United States.

Journey of Hope, Inc. Is A Peer-Led Organization Which Consists of Survivors Supporting Survivors. Each Staff Member at Journey of Hope Has Endured Violence & Sexual Assault And/Or Abuse Or Systemic Abuse & Violence At Some Point Within Their Lives. We Know Firsthand, The Obstacles That Survivors Face Within The Broken Systems That Are Supposed To Protect & Help Survivors, But Usually End Up Harming Them, Keeping Them Stuck In Vicious Cycles of Recidivism or Domestic Violence & Trafficking. Our Trauma-Informed Care Models, Case Management Services, & Survivor Resources Are All Part of Our Services & Programs We Offer In Salt Lake City & Across The Wasatch Front.
For the most vulnerable and marginalized in the community; Those living in poverty AND Youth of Color, these roads lead to self-medicating and drug use, drug related violence, including sexual exploitation, ongoing violence, disordered mental health and substance abuse, and eventually incarceration.
We know how to help those caught in this horrific cycle to choose the path to find safety, and heal their brains and limbic systems, get into trauma informed mental health and substance abuse services, find safe housing, and transform their lives from merely Surviving into Living AND Thriving.
Specifically tailored for traumatized & at-risk Women, Girls, & Affected Youth, which include our HER Empowerment Case Management Services, Youth Empowerment Case Management Services, and Peer Leadership Classes. All of our Programs use Evidence-Based, Trauma-Informed -Informed Approaches for holistic healing.
Journey of Hope's HER Empowerment Case Management Services Program is an evidence-based model including the following principles and practices;
This client-driven program, allows the Women to decide how often they need Case Management Support to assist in navigating all critical obstacles in their lives including fleeing violence, homelessness, incarceration, addiction, mental illness, food and clothing needs, safe long term housing opportunities, family reunification, as well as navigating all the support available in their community to meet those needs.
Journey of Hope, Inc. is in dire need of funding to expand our Case Management Services so we can provide trauma-informed care to the most harmed Girls, Affected Youth & LGBTQIA+ in our community.
These children have been sexually exploited and trafficked, and are suffering from severe Post Traumatic Brain Injuries and Complex PTSD, as well as taking on the burden of trying to navigate the devastating effects and issues stemming from trauma that include disorders when it comes to mental health and substance abuse.
Many of our Affected Youth Clients end up in State facilities, State Hospitals, and the University of Utah Neuropsychiatric Unit as well as Detention & Juvenile Justice Facilities. Sadly, once they turn 18 years of age, all State Support & Assistance, as well as case management services are taken away and they are left on their own.
Currently, there are NO safe spaces for homeless, trafficked, and abused Girls, Affected Youth, and LGBTQIA+ in our Community. The Youth homeless shelter is surrounded by predators; Specifically gang members with ties to human trafficking, watching for vulnerable Youth to walk in the door. There are no homes for trafficked Girls or affected Youth. We are the only nonprofit in Salt Lake City and Utah standing within the gap(s) for this population, and these vulnerable and traumatized Youth need homes, safe spaces, and resources to be able to heal the horrific trauma they have endured as a result of being homeless and suffering trauma.
Initially, we help women with basic needs like safe shelter, clothing, food, employment, medication access, and basic healthcare as well as mental healthcare triage. As we work with women to improve the areas of their lives they want to address through trauma-informed care, we challenge and explore living wage employment opportunities, training, and the opportunity for them to own real estate and other assets in their future, as well as becoming stable and contributing members of the Community.
We started teaching a Financial Empowerment Course, specifically written for women who have been abused, while assisting several clients in improving their credit scores, giving them opportunities to work with AAA Fair Credit and various institutions like Community Development Corporation of Utah. Several of our clients are in the process of purchasing a HUD home with a HUD down payment, after getting their credit score in the high 600’s. These women are excited that the trauma of their past related mental health and substance abuse setbacks will not keep them from improving their financial outcomes and opportunities for themselves and their children in the future.
We also have Peer Leadership Classes, a Processing Group, and Seeking Safety Programs, as an aftercare component for clients who need additional support. This will allow our clients completing inpatient programs and rehab facilities to transition into aftercare with our trauma-informed case management services and support through Journey of Hope, Inc.
This program was the first program implemented by Journey of Hope in 2014, with 17% recidivism in three years. Community Volunteers are trained in the Women’s Case Management Model to follow Gender Responsive Guiding Principles, evidence-based principles. They are matched in pairs with a woman 3-6 months prior to her release from prison and they meet weekly or bi-weekly with the woman on a plan for her success when she walks out and back into the community. They then help her transition and are with her for up to 12 months while she overcomes barriers to housing, employment, treatment, reunification with children and safe family.
This program has assisted hundreds of women walking out of the Utah State Prison, the State rate of recidivism is the highest in the nation at 80%. Our 17% rate shows that when women are safe, can have the opportunity to make a livable wage, have access to trauma informed therapy, housing, and support they are powerfully resilient! We have saved the State taxpayers millions of dollars over the last five and a half years with this program.
Providing case management services from a trauma-informed care approach, allows these Women who struggle with things like mental health and substance abuse, to overcome the trauma they have endured and get to the root of what needs to be healed.
Mind. Body. Spirit. is an ALL NEW Program presented by Journey of Hope, Inc. and Philip Kirk, an experienced and trained Self Defense Martial Artist, who is extremely passionate about helping Survivors of Domestic Violence start their healing journeys to physically, mentally, and spiritually reclaim their power. We are so excited to launch this Program, and all Journey of Hope, Inc. Clients can learn self defense at NO COST.
Tentative Start Date(s): SUMMER 2024
Hello, my name is Philip Kirk. I started my Martial Arts training in August of 2018, and I am currently a Brown Belt in the Karate style of Goju Ryu. I was able to start Goju Ryu because my former Sensei, Renchi Michael Vincent, offered free “Karate Mondays” at his Dojo. I have been training in Martial Arts ever since.I am also a Survivor of domestic violence. Helping fellow Survivors is a passion of mine.
Sadly, our original Sensei lost his life to domestic violence when his partner shot and killed him in the Dojo. I now have the privilege to be able to continue my training under his original Sensei, Kyoshi Charlie Clark.
When I was given the opportunity to take on students, I knew that I wanted to continue the tradition and carry on Michael Vincent and Charlie Clark’s legacy by offering free classes to people who have suffered acts of violence or abuse.
My goal of teaching self defense is to empower Survivors with the knowledge and tools necessary to protect themselves and their loved ones should they find themselves in a situation where violence could happen or escalate. And if violence does happen to take place, the Survivor will have the knowledge, in the moment, and realize they don't have to just sit back and take the abuse. The Survivors can stand up for themselves and defend themselves. They can reclaim their physical power, and they no longer have to feel victimized by violence or abuse.
